Overview:
African Pioneer Group has held an equity interest in the Metrowind Van Stadens Wind Farm through its shareholding in TEWA Power. MetroWind’s Van Stadens Wind Farm is a world-class project under development in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. This R550 million renewable energy project, one of the first in South Africa, will provide around 80 million kWh/year to the NMBM, and is an identified strategic economic development project in the region.
The project is aligned with the Department of Energy of the Republic of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer procurement programme and Integrated Resource Plan and will mitigate existing Eskom grid losses in the area, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.
Located in one of the best wind energy areas in South Africa, the project uses state-of-the-art technology and is designed to minimise any negative impacts on the environment and its neighbours. Local community members will share in the benefits of the project through a 5% interest held through the MetroWind Community Trust. A further 1.5% of annual revenue will be directed towards socio-economic and enterprise development projects. The wind farm will not only create facilities and jobs but also increase knowledge and skills and provide a strategic opportunity to foster a community that is uniquely positioned to benefit from the growth of sustainable economic development.
